Petra (Alvarez) Cardenas, 80, of Granger went to be with her Lord and Savior Friday, April 11, 2008, with her loving family by her side.
Petra Alvarez Cardenas was born Dec. 25, 1927, in Brownsville, Texas to Celedonio and Rita (Gonzalez) Alvarez.
Petra married Refugio Cardenas in Edinburg, Texas, on Sept. 20, 1943. The result of this union was a total of 11 children that has now grown to include 45 grandchildren, 60 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Granger.
Petra loved to cook and care for her family. In her spare time, she enjoyed crocheting and working in her rose garden. She cherished time spent with her family. She was dedicated to praying the rosary.
Petra is survived by her immediate children; Robert (Margarita) of Granger, John of Outlook, Joe (Lola) of Granger, Fred (Janie) of Granger, Jane Villanueva (Mario) of Yakima, Roy (Teresa) of Granger, Mary Richards (David) of Boardman, Ore., Refugio Jr. (Debbie) of Granger, Ray (Anna) of Yakima, Angie Antunes (David) and Jesse (Maria), all of Granger; three sisters, Celedonia (Sally) Robles, Gerarda (Gigi) Gatica and Rosie Gomez; one brother, Andres Gonzalez; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Refugio in 1988; three brothers, Ramon, Luis and Candelario; and four sisters, Maria Magdalena Alvarez, Siria Limon, Paula Guerra and Demetria Morales.
Viewing and visitation will be held Tuesday, April 15, 2008, from 4:30 to 8 p.m. with a Rosary to be recited at 7 p.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Granger. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, April 16, 2008, at noon at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Granger. Burial will be held at Sunnyside Cemetery.
