KENNEWICK - Eastmont's Brady Parsons tamed the rock-hard greens at the Tri-City Country Club yesterday, winning medalist honors with a 2-over-par 67.
Teammate Luke Luttrell was one shot back with a 68, and with two other Wildcat golfers cracking the top 10, Eastmont ran away with the team title at Monday's 3A Columbia Basin League POD match.
The 'Cats tallied a match-low team score of 280, 20 strokes better than the runner-up Southridge Suns.
Sunnyside, as it has done in the two previous POD matches this season, brought up the rear yesterday with a team score of 372.
The Grizzlies' top golfer this season has been senior Justin Bos, and yesterday proved to be no exception. Bos stumbled into the turn with a 9-over-par 42, but righted the ship slightly on the back side and posted a 5-over-par 37 on the final nine holes of play.
His 18-hole, 14-over score of 79 was 12 strokes lower than his closest teammate.
In absorbing a 79 yesterday, which was well above his scoring average this season, Bos had no answer for the Tri-City Country Club's extremely quick and treacherous greens.
"The greens there right now are like concrete," said Sunnyside Coach Ryan Wattenbarger. "They wouldn't even hold a wedge shot."
Second in for the Grizzlies Monday afternoon was A.J. Visser. He skated around the front side with a 10-over-par 43, but ballooned on the back side with a 16-over-par 48. In tallying a 91, Visser never posted anything higher than a seven, but did absorb a pair of triple-bogeys.
Sunnyside's Nathan Espinoza and Nick Navarro rounded out the scoring for the Grizzlies. Espinoza remained consistent by firing a pair of 48's on the two nines, with Navarro posting a 106 (54-52).
Also competing at the 3A league POD match were Sunnyside's P.J. Garcia and Jose Luis Mendoza. Garcia shot a 114 (60-54) and Mendoza tallied a 138 (65-73), although neither of their scores were applied to the team total.
In finishing second in the team scoring with a 300, Southridge was led by Justin Sprengel with a 4-over-par 69. West Valley's four golfers, third with a team score of 304, had individual scores ranging from 75 to 77.
The Sunnyside Grizzlies will host a 3A POD match this coming Thursday at Black Rock Creek Golf Course. The prep linksters will tee it up at 1:30 p.m.
