PASCO - Sunnyside's Black Rock Creek 50 & over golfers, the defending Columbia Basin Senior Golf Tour champions, opened the 2008 season last week right where they left off in 2007.

Competing at Pasco's Sun Willows Golf Course, the Sunnyside squad won the season opener by four strokes over a combined squad from Kennewick's Canyon Lakes Golf Course and Richland's Horn Rapids Golf Course. Another 10 strokes back was the host Sun Willows team, the third place finishers.

Leading the way for the Black Rock Creek team were Akira Nozaka, Perry Barnhill, James Noel and Gene McIntire.

Nozaka turned in the low round for the Lower Valley team, shooting a 6-over-par 78. One shot back at 79 was Noel, with McIntire coming in with an 82.

Barnhill ended up carding the second low net round from the entire field at last week's tournament. He shot an 80, but carrying a handicap of 15 he posted a net score of 65 (actual score minus handicap).

Also shooting below their scoring averages were Black Rock Creek's Stan Davis, Don Williams, Lindyn Andreasen and Ron Dobrauc with net scores of 68, 68, 69 and 69, respectively.

The next Columbia Basin Senior Golf Tour event is scheduled for Thursday, May 1, at Walla Walla Veterans Golf Course, with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start planned. All Black Rock Creek senior golfers interested in competing are urged to sign up in the Sunnyside golf course pro shop by next Monday, April 28.
