The class 1B Sunnyside Christian Lady Knights, behind the 3-for-4 offensive performance of Emma Newhouse, powered past the 2A Grandview girls fastpitch softball team, 8-1, yesterday afternoon.
Thursday's non-league victory avenged Sunnyside Christian's season opening 10-9 loss to Grandview back on March 13.
In holding the Lady 'Hounds to just one run yesterday, southpaw hurler Hilari Bosma limited Grandview's batters to only four hits.
Grandview plated its lone run in the top of the first. Kayla Gonzalez, who singled her way aboard, scampered home on a long triple to right-center field off the bat of Doris Lupercio.
Sunnyside Christian countered in its half of the first with a pair of runs to take the lead for good. With two outs, Newhouse cracked a single and then came round to score the tying run on an RBI double by Bosma. Naomi den Hoed, who was 2-for-3 in the game, followed with an RBI single to give the host Lady Knights the lead.
After forging a 5-1 lead through five innings of play, Sunnyside Christian put the icing on the cake with a three-run uprising in the bottom of the sixth. Newhouse, Leah Bosma, Julie Long and Ashley Haak all had singles in the frame.
The Lady Knights (12-2) have two more non-league games scheduled for next Tuesday, April 29, at LaSalle. Grandview (6-8) will play a league doubleheader at Quincy this coming Saturday.
