Frank Galaviz Sr., 73, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2008, surrounded by his family in Toppenish.

He was born March 9, 1935 in Edinburgh, Texas to Cristino and Mary Galaviz. Dad spent his early years migrating to and from Washington State to work in the fields until his family settled in Washington to work for Golden Gate Farms.

He met and married our mother, Phyllis Hernandez, in 1951. Together they started their family of 12 children. Dad worked the fields for a few years until he and mom moved to Mabton. He got a job with the city of Mabton where he worked in city maintenance and as a police officer for a few years. In 1977 he started a new job at the WPPS plant as a security guard. In 1978 he and his son, Tony, opened the Past Time Tavern in Toppenish. He retired in 2003.

Dad enjoyed golf, his music and Olympia beer.

He is survived by the mother of his children, Phyllis Aguilar; his children, Frank Jr. (Margaret), Diana Castaneda (Francisco), Richard, Sara Galaviz, Tony (Leanne), Vickie Garza (George), Lilly Bermudez (Leo), Angie Harris (Dan), Steve (Marie) and Val (Julie); three sisters, Elva Alvarez, Connie Mercado and Solome Hernandez; four brothers, Augustine, Joe Sr., Leo and Ruben Galaviz; and 73 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his son, Rene.

A Rosary will be recited Thursday, Aug. 7, 2008, at 5:30 p.m. at St. Aloysius Church in Toppenish. A memorial service will be held Friday, Aug. 8, 2008, at 2 p.m. at St. Aloysius Church in Toppenish.
