CONNELL - The Mabton Lady Vikings were a little sluggish on the court this past Friday night, losing at Connell 55-31.
"We just didn't shoot very well," said Mabton Coach Craig McCallum. "We ran into a pretty aggressive defense and my girls didn't adapt to it real well."
For the night, McCallum said the Vikings were 8-for-42 from the field.
"It just turned into one of those nights," he said. "They took a run on us in the first quarter and we just couldn't rebound after that."
But, he added, Mabton's Cassandra Martinez was one of the bright spots of the night, scoring 10 points off the bench.
Teammate Ana Jiminez was 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Terry Flores garnered five points and Crysta Reynolds and Brizi Enriquez each scored four. Lady Viking Melissa Gutierrez scored two points.
Saturday night, the Vikings fared better, garnering a 66-45 win at Warden.
"My girls bounced back," said McCallum. "That's what's fun about this team…it was like a night and day difference between the two games."
Mabton was 24-for-56 from the field.
"We came out in the first quarter and pretty much put it away," McCallum said, adding that the score was 31-8 in Mabton's favor at the end of the first quarter.
Fired up, Jiminez scored 15 points in the first quarter. "She went after it…she bounced back pretty well."
Jiminez scored 21 points for the night and Flores notched 12. Reynolds and Gutierrez chipped in six points apiece, while Monica Tellez scored one point.
Of Tellez, McCallum said, "The points don't show it, but she had a pretty good weekend. On Saturday night she had 10 rebounds. She rebounded the heck out of the ball for me both nights."
Enriquez scored two points and Trishi Williams scored 10. Cassandra Martinez scored eight points. "Coming off the bench, she's given us some pretty good minutes," McCallum said of Martinez.
For both games combined, Mabton was 26-for-32 from the free throw line.
"I'll take that any day of the week," McCallum said.
Mabton next plays against White Swan this Tuesday.
