BICKLETON - The Sunnyside Christian High School boys basketball team used a 34-5 run to overcome an early deficit and defeat Bickleton 71-35 last night.
The Tuesday night game at Bickleton went the host's way in the opening minutes, as the Pirates built a 9-2 lead.
"They came out and Cody Loomis hit a couple of baskets," Sunnyside Christian Coach Dean Wagenaar said of Bickleton's early spark. "Give Bickleton credit, they played very well."
Wagenaar also praised the Pirates' zone coverage, which forced Sunnyside Christian to shoot from the outside, rather than push the ball into the paint.
"They made us hit some threes," he said. "Bickleton played hard in a tight zone and made us beat them from the outside."
Sunnyside Christian started turning the tide later in the first quarter, as Joel Koopmans scored nine of his game-high 18 points in the first and Jordan Vogel canned a trey at the buzzer to put Sunnyside Christian up 15-12 heading into the second stanza.
The Knights' Danny Van Boven had a career game in the second quarter, drilling three buckets from three-point land and stealing the ball twice for lay-ups to score 14 points in the quarter and lead Sunnyside Christian to a 36-14 advantage.
Loomis responded with back-to-back three pointers just before halftime to make it a 36-20 game.
Sunnyside Christian substituted liberally in the fourth quarter, when reserve Ryker Van Belle caught fire for the Knights with three consecutive three-pointers and a three-point play to score 12 points in the final six minutes.
Van Boven ended up with 16 points for the game, while teammate Jason Friend collected 10 rebounds and blocked six shots while patrolling the paint. Steven Broersma also had five rebounds for Sunnyside Christian and the Knights' Marc De Jong collected five rebounds and three steals.
Loomis led Bickleton with 16 points.
Sunnyside Christian (7-0, 10-3) now readies for three games in a span of three days, hosting Trout Lake this coming Thursday, followed by a make-up game at 1A Wahluke on Friday and at Riverside Christian on Saturday.
Bickleton (1-6, 6-7) travels to Klickitat on Friday.
