The body of a young woman was found in a Sunnyside irrigation canal this past Friday, July 4. The Yakima County Sheriff's office says it received a call just before 8 p.m. Friday when someone said they saw the body floating in the canal near the 5500 block of Emerald Road.
Deputies arrived at the scene and retrieved the body from the water. The woman was described in age as between 18 to 25 years of age. She was found with a large gun shot wound to the body.
Detective Dave Johnson with the Sheriff's office said this morning that it's believed the woman was killed 24 to 48 hours before her body was found in the canal.
Johnson said the body has been identified, but declined to release the woman's name because of a request from the family.
Deputies are treating the case as a homicide. Johnson said there are currently no suspects in the case.
Anyone with information regarding the shooting is asked to contact Johnson or Detective Perrault at the Yakima County Sheriff's office at 509-574-2500.
