Sharks win, Neptunes earn sixth place at Toppenish Regionals

Kaitlyn Broersma breaks two records

TOPPENISH - This past weekend, the Sunnyside Sharks and Grandview Neptunes swim teams competed at the Toppenish AAU Regional Championships.

The Sharks earned top honors at the meet with 1,206 team points and the Neptunes earned sixth-place honors with 460 points.

Sunnyside's Kaitlyn Broersma set two new meet records in the 18&U 50-meter freestyle and the 100-meter breaststroke, respectively. Her times were 30.64 and 1:25.72. Setting meet records at the event, however, is not new for Broersma, who holds the 50-meter breaststroke record for her time of 38.06 from last year.

She also won the 200-meter individual medley this past Saturday, with a time of 2:57.04 and clocked the winning time of 37.87 in the 50-meter breaststroke. In addition, she was the winner of the 100-meter freestyle, clocking 1:10.39, and the 100-meter backstroke with a time of 1:24.14.

Broersma's sisters Marisa and Brittany also brought hardware home for their performances. Marisa won four of her events and was runner-up in two events. Brittany earned victories in six events.

Sunnyside had a total of 33 competitors who earned fourth place honors or better over the weekend's events. They include Jolissa Mendoza (8&U) in three events, Emily Banks (8&U) in five events, Carlo Rodriguez (8&U) in one event, Katelyn Banks (10) in six events, Kalie Bestebreuer (10) in four events, Lyndsee Anderson (11) in six events, Alex Perez (11) in four events, Madi Marquez (12) in six events, Tad Tyhuis (12) in five events, Patrick Zecchino (8&U) in three events, Skylar Gray (8&U) in four events, Anthony Sanchez (9) in one event, Bryce Murphy (9) in three events, Cristian Vargas (14) in six events, Bailey Hazzard (8&U) in two events, Hunter Perez (9) in one event, Fox Rodriguez (10) in three events, Mathew Marquez (10) in four events, Katelyn Hazzard (11) in two events, Giovanni Rodriguez (14) in one event, Gentri Gray (8&U) in two events, Jordan Rodriguez (11) in two events, Alexandra Newhouse (13) in two events, Grant Stutesman (14) in three events, Kristen Wedam (15) in one event, Ashley Davis (10) in one event, Trajen Frank (11) in one event, Sadie Salas (9) in two events, Summer Hazzard (10) in one event, Christian Murphy (11) in one event and Christopher Martin (11) in one event.

The Neptunes' Tiana Perez (11) earned victories in four of her six events. The team had 19 swimmers who earned fourth place honors or better.

They include Maurice Prieto (9) with a runner-up finish, Jose Castilleja (13) with one victory and a top four finish in three other events, Tiffany Owens (14) in five events, Spencer Blanshan (18&U) in two events, Samantha Castaneda (13) in one event, Taran Perez (9) in one event, Aaliyah Fonseca (12) in two events, Shellbbei Martinez (8&U) in one event, Kassandra Martinez (10) in one event, Hailey Walker (11) in four events, Meghan Marquez (12) in one event, Zulema Valencia (13) in one event, Jessica Morales (14) in one event, Brendon Lynch-McGhan (11) in one event, Fabian Ruiz (14) in three events, Taylor Hall (11) in one event, Joey Fleming (9) in one event and Eric Escobar (13) in one event.

The Sharks compete again Thursday night at Naches and the Neptunes will be in the Toppenish pool tomorrow (Tuesday) night. Both meets are scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.
