Ramón Mendez, 23, of Sunnyside passed away Saturday, July 12, 2008, at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital due to injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident.
He was born Feb. 21, 1985 in Torrance, Calif. He received his education in Sunnyside, graduating with the class of 2003. He was a member of the Sunnyside High School soccer team. He attended Heritage University, working towards a four-year teaching degree. He was working as a substitute teacher in the Sunnyside School District with his goal set on becoming a principal.
He was a member of the PSV-Bien Joven soccer team, which competes in the Yakima Valley men's soccer league. He enjoyed music, DJing, fishing, basketball, camping, barbecues, going to the beach and watching movies, especially comedies. His favorite comedian was George Lopez. He cherished time spent with his family and friends and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Ramón's giving spirit compelled him to become an organ donor and by his gift 12 people will have the chance to live better lives.
He is survived by his parents, Pedro and Ernestina Gama of Sunnyside; two sisters, Lilia Montoya and Sylvia Villagrana (Jose), all of Sunnyside; two brothers, Demetrio Montoya (Olivia) of Spokane and Jose Montoya (Olgalilia) of Sacramento, Calif.; his fiancée Marissa Aguilar of Grandview, his grandmother, Esperanza Alcazar of Sunnyside; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Genaro Alcazar Chavez; and one aunt, Candalaria Alcazar.
Viewing and visitation will be held Wednesday, July 16, 2008, from 1 until 8 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home in Sunnyside. Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 17, 2008, at 10 a.m. at Smith Funeral Home in Sunnyside, with burial to follow at Lower Valley Memorial Gardens.
