Foster parents make a difference

Each May during National Foster Care Month, Sunnyside Division of Children and Family Services salutes the compassionate people who make a difference by serving as foster parents and relative caregivers. Thanks to these unsung heroes, many formerly abused or neglected children and teens will either safely reunite with their parents, be care for by relatives or be adopted by loving families.

Sunnyside Division of Children and Family Services would like to applaud all our foster parents and relative caregivers for their caring commitment and continuing support. Without the ongoing efforts of foster parents and relative caregivers, too many children will end up facing life's challenges all alone.

This year we honored foster parents and relative caregivers with plants and gift cards. In total, there were 52 local foster parents and relative caregivers who received a gift. Of the 52, one couple took home the Foster Parents of the Year Award for 2007. That couple was Mike and Sheiron Christensen, who took in a total of 11 foster children last year. Thanks to the Christensens and our other foster parents and relative caregivers, our jobs are much easier. Thank you!

Sunnyside Division of Children and Family Services would also like to thank the following locall businesses that helped us honor our foster parents and relative caregivers...Little Caesar's Pizza, Picture Me portrait studios, Morris Floral, Ace Hardware, Sunny Spot Carwash and Jitterz Espresso.

Now is the time to get involved. No matter how much time you have to give, you have the power to do something positive that will change a lifetime for a young person in foster care. For more information on becoming a foster parent, or to find out how you can volunteer, please call 836-5751.
