Black Rock Creek senior golfers tie for top honors at Desert Aire

DESERT AIRE - Jim Noel's 4-over-par 76, coupled with a pair of handicap-aided net 67's by Max Wickham and Ron Dobrauc, propelled Sunnyside's Black Rock Creek Golf Course team to a first place tie at the fourth stop on the 2008 Columbia Basin Senior Golf Tour.

Last Wednesday's senior tour event was hosted by Desert Aire. Both, Black Rock Creek and the host club shot tournament low team scores of 719. Sixteen shots back, at 735, was the third place finishing Canyon Lakes/Horn Rapids squad.

Last week's top showing by the Black Rock Creek team solidified the squad's grip on the top spot in this year's points standings. Through four events this season on the Columbia Basin Senior Golf Tour, the Sunnyside area team has compiled 44.5 points. The Canyon Lakes/Horn Rapids squad is sitting in the No. 2 spot with 40 points. Desert Aire is third with 36.5 points, and the Walla Walla Veterans Golf Course team and the Pendleton Country Club round out the top five with 36 points apiece.

In finishing in a two-way tie for first last week, Black Rock Creek was led by Noel. His 4-over-par 76 bested by five strokes the next best finishes by teammates Gene McIntire and Tom Diener, each of whom carded a 9-over-par 81.

On the net side (actual score minus handicap), the Sunnyside team got a pair of 5-under-par 67's from Wickham and Dobrauc. Also shooting under their established handicaps were Black Rock Creek's Marty Drollinger and John Fleming, each of whom netted a handicap-aided 69.

The lone gross skin winner from Black Rock Creek last Wednesday was McIntire. Local net skin winners were Fleming and Pete Laverman. Diener won KP honors on No. 6.

The next Columbia Basin Senior Golf Tour event will be hosted by the Black Rock Creek team on Thursday, June 19. Sign-ups must be completed in the local pro shop by Monday, June 16.
