Granger man gunned down Easter morning

GRANGER - A large gathering early Easter Sunday morning turned deadly yesterday, when Paul Erik Lopez, 24, was shot and killed in the street near his Granger home.

At about 2:30 a.m. Sunday, Granger police were called to the 900 block of Guzman Street following reports of a fight and shots fired. Initial reports indicated there was a gathering of about 30 or 40 people at the Lopez residence at the time of the shooting.

Upon arrival Granger police discovered Lopez, who had suffered a single gunshot wound to the upper abdomen and lower chest area. Lopez was transported first to Toppenish Regional Hospital and then transferred to Yakima Regional Hospital. He later died during surgery.

Granger police have turned over the investigation of the shooting to the Yakima County Sheriff's office, which is calling it a homicide.
