MABTON - Means of payment for a well project in Mabton was the topic of discussion at Mabton's regularly scheduled city council meeting last night.
The city received an invoice from Picatti Bros. dated Dec. 31, 2007 this past January totaling $19,324.89 for work that had been done the previous spring. City council members had already completed the 2008 budget and the amount had not been factored in.
Mayor Velva Herrera informed council that she researched city ordinances and found one that dates back to the 1980's that allows the city to use a contingency fund in the case of an emergency.
Herrera said the work the Picatti Bros. did for the city constitutes as an emergency because there was no water for the city when the well in question broke down.
According to the ordinance, Herrera had to present a memo from the city's engineers that states it was an emergency situation. She did so at last night's meeting.
According to the invoice, Picatti Bros. installed a used sub-turbine at the cost of $2,212. Herrera said the well broke down more than once, therefore, included in the bill is a new sub-turbine and new motor totaling $4,938.
Councilman Mario Martinez had the matter tabled so the city could find out if the initial motor was under warranty.
