Grizzlies square league record at 2-2

RICHLAND - The Sunnyside High School baseball team righted the ship yesterday with a 4-3, 2-1 sweep at Hanford High School in CBL play. The wins came on the heels of 10-0 and 17-0 losses to Kamiakin last Friday.

Schilperoort, Haringa notch wins at Davis meet

YAKIMA - In a non-scoring cross-over meet between 3A Sunnyside and West Valley, and 4A schools Eisenhower and Davis, the Grizzly track teams were led by Claire Schilperoort's first-place honors in the discus (109-7) and javelin (114-9).

Sunnyside Miss Cinco de Mayo candidate...Rubi Chavez

Sixteen-year-old Rubi Chavez often heard about the activities of the Miss Cinco de Mayo Court. The Sunnyside High School junior knew, for example, the court helps out in the community. She knew that being involved with the court was about helping people.

Sunnyside Miss Cinco de Mayo candidate...Yesenia Ruiz

Yesenia Ruiz does a lot of community service work. The 17-year-old sophomore at Sunnyside High School helps out with National Night Out. On Halloween she goes to daycare centers to hand out candy and helps explain to children the dangers of candy that's been tampered with.

Being a volunteer provides many benefits to people. It can help them feel like they are making a difference. Volunteering allows special skills and talents to be displayed. It enhances personal growth and self-esteem and according to Natalie Curfman, volunteering two to three hours a week can even make people live longer.

Grizzly soccer club wins season opener

The Sunnyside boys soccer team saw plenty of action this past weekend. On Friday the Grizzlies played Prosser and Richland to a draw at the Richland Jamboree. On Saturday, Sunnyside traveled to East Valley and stung last year's 2A State champs, 1-0.

Wind-measuring towers proposed north of Sunnyside
