Inez Kellett Stroup, 93, who lived most of her long life in Sunnyside and Yakima, died peacefully Wed., April 23, 2008, at Good Samaritan Health Center.

She was born Jan. 18, 1915 in Lamoure, N.D. to Herbert Kellett and Bessie Fisher Kellett.

When she was five years old, her family moved to the Yakima area, where her father worked as a painter. Her mother died a year later.

Her mother's sister, Hattie, came to Yakima to take care of Inez and a few years later married Herbert Kellett. Inez, an only child, was devoted to Hattie.

After graduating from Yakima High School, Inez learned secretarial skills and worked at Lindeman Power Equipment Co. in Yakima. There, she met Edgar I. "Ted" Stroup, whom she married in 1938. Fearing that their marriage would lead to her dismissal because of nepotism rules, the couple kept their wedding a secret for a time.

In 1939, Lindeman's John Deere dealership was sold, and the couple moved to Sunnyside, where Ted Stroup became the parts room manager for Valley Hay and Grain Company.

In Sunnyside, Inez held a number of secretarial jobs. She became secretary to the principal of Washington School and then secretary to the superintendent of schools.

The Stroups had two children, Richard Lyndell and Margaret Ann. Inez was a dedicated mother who led her son's Cub Scout troop and a Bluebird group for her daughter.

She belonged to Eastern Star and was a member of the Sunnyside Holy Trinity Episcopal Church. In later life, she attended St. Timothy's in Yakima.

Inez played golf, partly because of her husband's enthusiasm for the sport. Ted was a charter member of the Lower Valley Golf Club. Inez was a gracious hostess who enjoyed socializing with friends at the golf club.

In their later years, the Stroups were able to see Alaska, the Panama Canal and parts of South America on cruises.

Inez was a generous and thoughtful grandmother and great-grandmother who always looked for special gifts and cards for birthdays and holidays.

Her friends at the Highgate Senior Living retirement home remember Inez for being very helpful in the dining room and with seasonal decorating. They speak of already missing her feisty spirit and always-available hugs.

She is survived by her son, Richard Lyndell Stroup (Jane); her daughter, Margaret Ann "Peggy" Allan (Larry); her former daughter-in-law, Sandra Price Dasenbrock; five grandchildren, Michael, Craig, and David Stroup, Brooke Allan Davis and Alison Allan Minar; and five great-grandchildren, Sarah, Sean, Tygren and Lauren Stroup and Lillian Davis.

Inez was preceded in death by her husband, Ted, who died in 1998.

The family suggests that any memorial donations be sent to St. Timothy's memorial fund, 4105 Richey Road, Yakima, WA 98908, whose Eucharistic visitors were especially kind in providing Eucharist services to Inez in her final years.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, May 10, 2008, at 3 p.m. at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church in Yakima.

Shaw & Sons Funeral Directors of Yakima is in charge of arrangements.
