Black Rock Creek senior golfers second at Horn Rapids stop

RICHLAND - The third stop on the 2008 Columbia Basin Senior Golf Tour netted the Black Rock Creek team a runner-up finish.

Playing at Richland's Horn Rapids Golf Course last Wednesday, the Lower Valley Black Rock Creek squad finished second with a team tally of 726 strokes. A combined squad from the host Horn Rapids course and Kennewick's Canyon Lakes Golf Course won last week's senior tour competition, posting a tournament low team total of 718 strokes.

By finishing second last week, Black Rock Creek maintained its grip on this year's senior tour points lead. The local golfers are atop the tour standings with 33 points through the three competitions that have already taken place. The combined Horn Rapids/Canyon Lakes team moved into the second spot in the standings, now with 30 points. The Walla Walla Veterans Golf Course team, fourth place finishers at last week's tournament, sits in third place in the senior tour standings with 28 points.

In finishing second at the Horn Rapids tourney last week, Black Rock Creek got a big boost from Max Wickham. The Sunnyside golfer carded a round nine strokes below his scoring average, shooting a net 63 (actual score minus handicap). His score was the third low net round from the entire field.

Also shooting well below their established handicaps were Black Rock Creek's Troy Monholland (net 66), Bernie Schutt (net 68) and Lindyn Andreasen (net 69).

On the gross side (actual score), the Lower Yakima Valley squad was led by Grandview's Akira Nozaka. He toured the desert-style course with an impressive 5-over-par 77. Four shots back at 9-over-par 81 was teammate Jim Noel. Black Rock Creek's Gene McIntire had the third low score for the Lower Valley team, carding an 84.

Snaring net skins during the tourney were Black Rock Creek's Mike Stegeman (No. 10), John Fleming (No. 17) and Andreasen (No. 18).

The next stop on the Columbia Basin Senior Golf Tour is Desert Aire, scheduled for Wednesday, June 4. The competition will feature a 9 a.m. shotgun start. Local golfers who want to compete for the Lower Valley team that day are asked to sign up in the Black Rock Creek pro shop by Monday, June 2.
