Karen Serl, 55, lost her courageous battle with cancer on Friday, May 23, 2008. She is now in a better place so she can be with her son, Christopher, along with her parents and brothers, Dale and Billy Purdy.

She was born May 28, 1952 in Toppenish, the daughter of Clyde and Rosa (Graham) Purdy Sr.

She received her education in Granger.

On Sept. 9, 1977, Karen married Leland K. Serl Sr. in Sunnyside.

She worked as an extruder operator for P.W. Pipe in Sunnyside.

She had a love for life, all her family and friends.

She loved to go fishing in the summer and watch football in the winter (this was her passion).

Karen is survived by her husband, Leland Serl Sr.; four sons, Jeffrey L. Serl of Sunnyside, Kelly A. Serl of Grandview, Jeffrey S. Purdy of Selah and Leland K. Serl Jr. of Prosser; two daughters, Jennifer L. McDonald of San Pedro, Calif. and Joy M. Bingham of Prosser; six brothers, Clyde Purdy Jr. of Sunnyside, David Purdy of Wapato, Donnie Purdy of Berlington, Kan., Ronnie Purdy of Granger, Jack Purdy of Othello and James Purdy of Buena; six sisters, Rose Curtis and Roberta Wilson both of Harrah, Kathy Beck (twin of Karen), Florence Tackett and Jill Purdy all of Yakima, Alta Lowrey of Selah; 14 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and numerous nieces, nephews, and many, many friends.

A memorial service at the family home will be held at a later date.

Smith Funeral Home in Sunnyside is in charge of cremation.
