YAKIMA - It's not about how many games you win, it's when you win them, as the Sunnyside Lady Grizzly volleyball team won its first match of the season yesterday at West Valley in a three-way District playoff.
The win advances the Lady Grizzlies to the 3A Regional tournament this Saturday at 11 a.m. in Spokane.
The lone win of the season was over Hanford in yesterday's playoff, as Sunnyside defeated the Falcons 3-0, which had earned its only league win of the season in a victory over Sunnyside earlier this season. The Lady Grizzlies prevailed in the first of two contests on Wednesday, 25-16, 25-21, 25-19.
"We had practiced a lot and watched film from the last time we played Hanford," said Sunnyside Coach Mikal Aberle. "We made adjustments in our hitting and came together as a team."
Aberle said Sunnyside was also able to get more of its serves over. "We were a lot more consistent overall," she said.
In Sunnyside's other 3A District match on Wednesday, the Lady Grizzlies lost to West Valley 25-15, 25-14, 23-25, 25-12.
The split improved Sunnyside's record to 1-14 overall.
Despite a one-win campaign, Aberle feels Sunnyside deserves the chance to show what it can do at Regionals.
"I think we are already pushed in a big league with 4A teams, so it's nice to have a chance for the 3A (postseason play)," Aberle said. "It's nice to have a win and play against people in your own level of competition."
Sunnyside's first match at Regionals this coming Saturday will be a loser-out contest. A win would put the Lady Grizzlies into a double-elimination bracket with a State berth on the line.
