OCEAN SHORES - 2008 Sunnyside High School graduate Justin Bos is off and running. With the Columbia Basin Community College men's golf team, that is, as one of the Hawks' prized recruits this year.
The lanky, taut linkster proved to be one of the cogs in the Tri-Cities team earning a second-place finish at the 2008-09 community college season opener staged at Ocean Shores Country Club this past Sunday and Monday. The tournament drew a field of six schools.
Individually, Bos earned a seventh-place finish. He opened with a 4-over-par 75 on Sunday, backing up that solid round the following day with a 74.
His two-day, 7-over-par 149 left him 12 shots back of the medalist, a golfer from the Spokane area.
The Ocean Shores course features forest-lined fairways on the front nine, but is wide open after the turn. Ironically, Bos played some of his best golf on the more treacherous part of the course, carding 2-under-par 34's both days on the opening nine holes.
The down side, he grimaced, "...is that I was 11-over on the easier, wide open back nine."
In notching a 75 the first day of the tourney, Bos picked up three birdies, all coming on the front side.
His second day round of 74 featured two more tweeters, as well as a glitzy eagle on the 470-yard, par-5 fifth hole. Bos, whose strength is ripping the ball long off the blocks, boomed his tee shot on No. 5, leaving himself with a wedge into the green. He then nailed the putt for the eagle.
The Columbia Basin Hawks return to the links Oct. 12-13 at Wildhorse Golf Resort in Pendleton, Ore. for their league opener.
