Mabton claims second win of season

CLE ELUM - "In last night's game against Cle Elum, the Lady Vikings soccer team was on fire," said Mabton Coach Lucia Tovar.

The Lady Vikings earned its second season win with a 2-0 decision against the Cle Elum Warriors.

"They (Mabton) played the best game they have played all season, playing as a complete team," Tovar said. She said the team passed the ball well and the defense worked to keep the Warriors from the goal.

It was Cle Elum's senior night, according to Tovar. She said the Lady Vikings spoiled the evening and played with intensity the entire 80 minutes of the match-up.

The first goal was scored by Mabton's Alma Leon. She took the ball from mid-field and scored in the first three minutes of the game.

"In the 18th minute, Alma gave a nice pass to forward Sara Vazquez, allowing Sara to score her first goal of the season," said Tovar.

Although she felt Cle Elum also played an intense game, Tovar said the Warriors offense had difficulty getting past the Mabton defense.

"Brisi Enriquez, Dayanis Fuentes, Marlen Chavez and Janneth Orellana were able to communicate well on the field and ensure all players were marked," said Tovar, stating the communication skills between the Lady Vikings defensive players was instrumental in securing the win.

"They were able to grow from the first time we played Cle Elum, our first game at home," she said. That game was won by the Warriors 7-2, making last night's victory something the Lady Vikings are proud of.

"I could not have asked for more out of any of them," Tovar commented.

Next Tuesday, Mabton (2-10) returns to its home field to compete against Royal City. That night will be the Lady Vikings last match at home and it will be seniors night.
