Counting our (mixed) blessings

Our wedding anniversary was yesterday, Oct. 14, and it was an opportunity to look back on the ways that God has blessed us during our 19 years of marriage.

Unfortunately, yesterday also happened to be the day Joni found out the Sunnyside school she has been subbing in as a para-pro for the past six weeks decided to look elsewhere when it came time to permanently fill the job she has been doing. A job she has evidently been doing well as her classroom teacher actually recommended her for the post on a permanent basis.

It made yesterday kind of bittersweet...a celebration tinged with the unknown as beginning next week Joni again takes her resume and growing letters of reference in search of another elementary school classroom.

But as we considered our dinner plans yesterday we also took time to-as the hymn says-count our many blessings.

We have a roof over our head, shoes on our feet and enough food that one of these days I'll have to get around to going on a diet. God has provided a church home for us and ministry opportunities we could not have imagined prior to moving here.

With her hopefully temporary work hiatus, Joni will have the blessing of more time to catch up with other interests, like working in the yard or teaching our puppy to behave.

The news was discouraging, to be sure, but we also know that one way or another God will provide, He always has.

Joni will find another classroom. She enjoys it too much and there are too many classrooms needing someone to come in on a permanent or pinch-hit basis.

With that said, I think next year on our 20th we'll take the day off for our anniversary and spend the day hiding out to avoid bad news.
