As someone who spent a number of years in Washington state, both west and east of the Cascades, I have come to have a deep love for Washington and its people. It is out of love that I feel drawn to speak out against a measure to appear on the Washington state ballot in the November election...Measure I-1000.
Having spent a good part of my priestly life ministering to the sick and the dying, in hospitals and assisted care facilities, I can say that I-1000 is a terrible measure: one that should be rejected by all voters who respect the sanctity of life. What the sick and dying require is not assisted suicide, but the loving comfort and care of family and friends.
The documented abuses that have taken place in Oregon should convince all people of the Northwest that assisted suicide is a bad idea.
I pray to God that Measure I-1000 will be rejected by all right-thinking citizens.
