Does your employer pay 100 percent of you and your family's medical and health insurance?
During the past several years the city of Grandview and its management through negotiations, or lack thereof, has agreed for the city of Grandview to provide 100 percent health and life insurance for all city employees and their families.
By their preferred provider plan we, the taxpayers, pay $434 for the employee, $434 for the spouse and $385 additional for two or more children per month. This does not include dental, orthodontists or vision, which is an additional $185 per month.
The city also provides life insurance for all employees and their families. This amounts to over $1,400 per month for each employee, for a total in 2008 of approximately $867,400. With an anticipated increase of 10 percent, the insurance costs for 2009 would then run about $950,000.
Compare this to a highly educated and devoted teacher that is charged with the education of your children. The state pays for the employees' insurance, but not for the spouse or children. An employee in our school district pays between $250 and $750 per month, depending on the number of dependents and the insurance plan they choose.
Or, compare this to a retired couple on Social Security, who pay approximately $200 per month for Medicare, plus an additional amount from $150 to $450 for supplement insurance.
These are hard times and the only way I see to ever balance the city budget is to have the employees pay their share of the insurance costs.
Is there something wrong with this picture, of the city paying 100 percent of the insurance costs? If you think so, please let your elected officials know because they are now beginning negotiations for 2009.
