MABTON - A 14-year-old boy facing 21 counts of vandalism has been apprehended by Mabton police.
Mabton Police Chief Robert Perales said local residents began noticing a major graffiti spree last weekend.
"It was very distinct," said Perales. "We had never seen that type of graffiti in this area before."
Thanks to an alert employee at Blue Sky Market this past Wednesday, the teen was spotted defacing public property. Police were called and the youngster was arrested.
"Extremely helpful" is how Perales described the actions of the store employee who called local police. "We need the eyes and ears of our local residents to help us curb crime.
"This is a prime example of local residents working together with the police to make our community safe," he said.
Perales said the teen who was apprehended this past Wednesday is not known to be associated with any criminal gang. He has been transferred to the juvenile detention center in Yakima, awaiting formal charges.
