Albert Haskins, 96, of Portland, Ore., and a longtime Sunnyside resident and businessman, died peacefully at his retirement home on Sunday, March 8, 2009.
Albert was the son of Roy and Valtina Haskins, early pioneers of Sunnyside.
He went to Sunnyside schools and attended the University of Washington. He graduated with a degree in engineering. He belonged to Beta Theta Pi fraternity.
After graduation, Albert went to work as an engineer on the Grand Coulee Dam. He returned to Sunnyside after six months to be with his sweetheart, Katie.
In 1937 he began to manage the family businesses, Haskin's Funeral Home, and Haskins Variety Store.
Al was active in his community serving as president of Sunnyside Rotary Club, Sunnyside Chamber of Commerce, a board member of the Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital in Sunnyside, charter member of the Lower Yakima Valley Elks, as well as charter member, club champion and president of the Lower Valley Golf and Country Club. He was an active member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, where he continued an enthusiastic lifetime support of youth activities.
Al and Katie enjoyed golf, traveling to exotic places, and enduring friendships with a host of devoted friends. He loved playing cards, especially Captain Robbie's rummy and his monthly penny ante poker club.
He is survived by his daughter, Becky; and two granddaughters, Barbie and Cathy.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, April 9, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity Church, Fourth Street and Edison Avenue in Sunnyside.
Terry Family Funeral Home in Portland, Ore. was in charge of arrangements.
