BENTON CITY - The Mabton Vikings soccer team scored its second victory of the season against Kiona-Benton yesterday, a 3-0 shutout. Mabton defeated the Bears by a 2-1 score in early March.
The Vikings traveled to Benton City and played the way Mabton Coach Andy Dyer wanted them to.
He said, "We played with control and more as a team than we have in the past...I hope to see a lot more play like that in the future."
Dyer went on to say the Vikings have made some personnel changes, bringing up keeper Gerry Barajas from Mabton's JV team. Of that change, Dyer said he feels Barajas provides a contribution to the varsity's overall efforts.
With that addition, varsity keeper Luis Aviles was able to be on the field as a forward yesterday. His performance on the field gives Mabton a more diverse line-up and proved fruitful as Aviles scored the Vikings' third goal at the 30-minute mark in the second half of the match.
Hector Brambila secured the first goal for Mabton 33 minutes into the first half of the match against the Bears, and Juan Aguilar scored a second goal 17 minutes into the second half.
"We still need a better percentage of goal to shot ratio, as we had many shots not go in," commented Dyer, adding he felt last night's match was a good comeback from the team's loss to Wahluke earlier this week.
The Mabton JV team did not play last night, but both teams are scheduled to face off against the Rangers in Naches tomorrow (Saturday). The varsity team improved its record to 4-6 overall with last night's win.
