First ever school district art walk begins tomorrow

The Sunnyside School District will host a first-ever Art Walk slated to begin tomorrow. The event runs through Saturday.

The Art Walk will feature singing, dancing and even unicyclists and a Chinese yo-yo presentation.

According to Sunnyside High School's Yoko Kan, Sierra Vista Middle School's Julie Kerr came up with the idea of involving multiple schools and showcasing student talent.

"(She) thought that it would be fun to have an art walk in town in Sunnyside, similar to the art walks she was accustomed to going to in Bellingham during college," Kan said, adding that she herself enjoyed art walks during her college days. Kan said the event is a great opportunity not just for the students, but for the community, too.

The idea was met with great enthusiasm and support in the district, Kan said. Teachers have been working with students all year to showcase their many talents, she added.

"Students will be able to display their work in a public setting (and) community members will have the opportunity to see student work and good quality art within their community," Kan said.

In the high school commons, artwork will be on display from students at each of the schools. The community will have the opportunity to vote for a People's Choice award, Kan said. Middle and high school students will compete for a Best of Show award. "Judges will be art teachers, members from the community and the school board," Kan said.

On Friday, the Art Walk begins at 4 p.m. and on Saturday at 10 a.m. All events take place at the Sunnyside High School commons and auditorium.
