Grizzlies earn four 'top 5' finishes at 16-team Prosser High invitational

PROSSER - Paced by senior Francisco Navarro-Rodriguez, the Sunnyside High School track and field team returned home from the Prosser invite this past Saturday with four "top five" finishes from the 16-school competition.

Navarro-Rodriguez had two of the Grizzlies' four "top five" performances. He placed fourth in both the long jump and triple jump.

In the long jump, Navarro-Rodriguez was one of 18 competitors. His effort of 19 feet, 10 inches was the fourth best. The three athletes who topped his 19-10 mark included Tanner Markham of Spokane's Central Valley High School (21-2.5), Cody Peterson of Spokane's Rogers High School (21-1.5) and Matt Wildey of Richland (20-3).

Navarro-Rodriguez turned in one of his best efforts of the season in the triple jump, recording a rare 40-foot-plus performance. The Grizzly's best effort on the day was 41-0. The only three triple jumpers to top him were Robert Jessop of Kennewick (43-9.5), Hanford's Josh Bland (42-7.5) and Selah's Colin Anyan (41-5).

The only Grizzly to bring home a first place finish from Prosser last Saturday was junior Kennedy Sarmiento. He sped to a clocking of 15.92 seconds in the 110-meter high hurdles to best the 17-boy field. The closest competitor to him was Connell's Colton Riner, who placed second overall with a clocking of 16.10 seconds.

The one other Sunnyside athlete to place in the top five on Saturday was freshman Marisa Broersma. Competing in the girls 800-meter run, she scooted around the oval twice in a time of 2:30.59. Broersma was clipped for runner-up honors by less than half a second, as Richland's Lauren Dernbach turned in a time of 2:30.13. The 800m winner was Breanna Daniel of Hanford, who clocked a time of 2:27.75.

Team-wise, Sunnyside placed eighth in the boys standings at Prosser with 37.5 points. Hanford won the boys team title with 133 points. The host Mustangs brought up the rear with 3 points.

Hanford also won the girls team title at the Prosser invite, tallying 102 points on the day. Sunnyside, with 8 points, placed 14th overall. Davis High School and Bickleton finished behind the Lady Grizzlies with 6 and 2 points, respectively.
