Former hoop coach sentenced to six months

YAKIMA - Former Mabton High School girls basketball coach Mike Roettger was sentenced to six months in jail yesterday after pleading guilty last month to sexual misconduct with a minor in the first degree.

Roettger, who coached the Mabton High School girls basketball team for four years before resigning last year, was sentenced Wednesday in Yakima County Superior Court and will serve his term in the county jail.

His guilty plea was related to his involvement with a girl who played on the basketball team while he was the coach.

The Yakima County clerk's office confirmed that Roettger was sentenced to six months, with credit for 46 days already served.

Under sentencing guidelines, he could have been sentenced for up to 12 months in jail.

The clerk's office also noted that Roettger will need to register as a sex offender within 24 hours of his release. In addition, he must pay $800 in fees.
