Eluding suspect now in police custody

A Sunnyside man charged with leading police on a 47-minute car chase with children in his vehicle is now in custody and facing three charges.

Rolando Fonseca, 23, was arrested yesterday, Wednesday, in the 2000 block of Waneta Road by the Yakima County Violent Crimes Task Force. Police say that as officers moved in on Fonseca he picked up a small child to use as a shield, hoping to avoid arrest. Officers were able to sneak up behind and startle Fonseca. He was taken into custody and the child was unharmed.

This incident started Tuesday night when police said they observed Fonseca speeding in a green Lincoln Navigator through the Safeway parking lot in Sunnyside. Attempts to stop the vehicle were unsuccessful and Fonseca, they say, led police on a 47-minute chase through Sunnyside and into the surrounding areas. When police say they determined that Fonseca had children in the vehicle the pursuit was terminated for the safety of the children.

Police are requesting charges of felony eluding, reckless driving and driving with a suspended license in the first degree. Police said they are working with Child Protection Services and more charges could be forthcoming.
