Two dead, four hurt in two-vehicle mishap

ZILLAH - Two Zillah men perished in a two-vehicle crash that occurred last night at Cheyne and Gilbert roads, just north of Zillah. Four others sustained serious injuries, as well.

Washington State Patrol officials report the accident was the result of Pedro Mendez-Morales running the stop sign on Gilbert Road at the Cheyne Road intersection. Morales was one of the two killed in the Wednesday evening, 9:30 p.m. collision.

A passenger in the 22-year-old Morales' 1991 Toyota Corolla, 19-year-old Salvador Salgado-Mendoza, also of Zillah, died too.

Two other passengers in the Toyota Corolla, 18-year-old Leonardo Lomeli-Salgado of Mexico and an unidentified person suffered injuries, as well.

The vehicle struck by Morales' 1991 Toyota, four-door sedan was a 1997 Chrysler van driven by Justin D. Lowe, 25, of Zillah. He and a passenger in his van, 25-year-old Evan J. Murray of Granger, required medical treatment at Yakima Regional Hospital.

WSP troopers say Lowe and Murray were northbound on Cheyne Road in the '97 van when the westbound Toyota Corolla failed to stop at the stop sign on Gilbert Road. The ensuing collision sent both vehicles careening into a nearby residence.
