KENNEWICK - A 4-over-par 76 by Grandview's Akira Nozaka powered the Black Rock Creek team to a second-place finish at last Wednesday's Mid-Columbia Senior Golf Tour competition, staged at Kennewick's Canyon Lakes Golf Course.
The Canyon Lakes contest was the ninth of 12 stops on the 2009 senior tour.
The Lower Yakima Valley Black Rock Creek squad is currently atop the senior tour points board, in search of its third consecutive tour title.
In placing second in last week's competition, Black Rock Creek tallied a team score of 735. The host Canyon Lakes/Horn Rapids squad earned top honors on Wednesday by shooting an aggregate 711. One shot behind Black Rock Creek, with a 736 for third-place honors, was the combined squad from Sun Tides and Apple Tree golf courses.
Posting the three low individual rounds for Black Rock Creek last week were Nozaka with a 76, Bob Barker with an 82 and Perry Barnhill with an 83.
The low net rounds turned in for Black Rock Creek (actual score minus handicap) were a trio of 69's, claimed by Tom Diener, Bernie Schutt and John Fleming.
The KP winner on the day for Black Rock Creek was Mike Stegeman, who stuck his tee shot closest to the pin on hole No. 7. That earned Stegeman $27 in prize money.
The next senior tour stop is at the Pendleton Country Club. Local seniors who want to play in the Friday, Sept. 4, competition are asked to sign up in the Black Rock Creek pro shop no later than Tuesday, Sept. 1.
