Leland K. Serl, 68, of Outlook, passed away on Aug. 18, 2009, after a courageous battle with Leukemia. He was surrounded by his family who loved him dearly.

Leland was born on Oct. 22, 1940 in Chehalis. He was the son of Wray D. and Mabel (Weirer) Serl. Leland received his education in White Swan and graduated with the class of 1958. He served in the United States Mariner Corp from 1958 to 1961. Following his military duty, Leland returned to Toppenish where he worked for the Union Pacific Railroad for six months as a gandy dancer.

For a short time, Leland went to school at YVCC in Yakima. In December of 1962 he married Sharon Weddle in Toppenish and they had four children.

Leland went to apprentice school at Bremerton Naval Shipyard learning to be a welder. Leland worked as a welder at the Hanford project for 26 years.

On Sept. 9, 1977 he married Karen Purdy in Sunnyside and raised two sons. Leland enjoyed everyday life and cherished time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchild.

He is survived by six children Jeffrey (Lola), Kelly (Lori), Jennifer (Neal), Joy (Gene), Jeffery Scott Purdy (Mary) and Leland Jr. (Anna); 13 grandchildren and one great grandchild. He is also survived by five brothers and their wives, Bob Serl, John Serl, Glen Serl, Wray D. Serl Jr., Lawrence Serl and one sister, Linda Hebert. He is also survived by his mother, Mabel Serl.

He is preceded in death by his one brother, Leo Serl and wife Karen Serl. At Leland's request there will be no formal funeral service. Smith Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Those wishing to sign Leland's online memorial book may do so at
