Noting the example of other cities like Grandview, the Sunnyside City Council last night agreed to change the times and dates of its meetings.
Under the ordinance passed Monday night, council's regular meetings will still be on the second and fourth Mondays of each month.
The meeting time, though, will be changed to 7 p.m. from the previous time of 6:30 p.m.
The reason for the change is that council decided to have workshops one hour prior to each council meeting.
That means starting with the next council meeting on Monday, Sept. 14, the evening will start at 6 p.m. with a workshop, followed by the regular meeting at 7 p.m.
Under the previous meeting ordinance, council workshops were held on days other than regular meeting dates.
During a city council retreat held on Saturday, Aug. 15, council requested an ordinance that would change the workshop regulations so they could be held prior to the regular meeting that same night.
The Grandview City Council has workshops before its regular council meetings. In Sunnyside's case, the 6 p.m. workshops will discuss items not on the regular agenda that same evening.
Instead, the workshops will be an opportunity to discuss items before they are added to future agendas.
Councilwoman Theresa Hancock applauded the move, noting council will now have more opportunities to review items before they are considered for action at regular meetings.
The workshops are non-action meetings and council will not accept public comment. The public can comment on workshop items, though, during the public comment section of regular council meetings.
