Granger man involved in fatality

UNION GAP - A two-car accident this past Sunday night claimed the life of a 19-year-old man, and sent two others to the Toppenish hospital.

Washington State Patrol officials say the collision occurred at about 9:10 p.m. Sunday evening on North Track Road approximately five miles southwest of Union Gap.

WSP troopers report that Casimiro J. Martinez, 18, of Granger, the driver of a 1994 Honda Accord, attempted to pass a 2009 Ford Mustang driven by 16-year-old Alejandra E. Tapia. Both vehicles were northbound on North Track Road.

The vehicles collided, say troopers, causing both cars to roll off the east side of the roadway.

A passenger in Tapia's Ford Mustang, 19-year-old Rojelio Vaca, was ejected from the car when it rolled. Vaca was not wearing a safety restraint. He later died at the Toppenish hospital.

Both, Martinez and Tapia sustained injuries and were transported to the hospital in Toppenish. Both drivers were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation. Criminal charges, say troopers, are pending.
