Former Sunnyside police receptionist in custody

A former Sunnyside police receptionist charged with five counts of felony theft from the Sunnyside Police Department is now in custody.

Sunnyside Police Chief Ed Radder told the Daily Sun News Virginia Perez was taken into custody this morning (Thursday) in Southgate, Calif. The Southgate Police Department and members of the U.S. Marshal Service made the arrest.

Perez was fired from her job Sept. 19, 2008 and prosecutors charged her in Yakima Superior Court with the thefts on Sept. 8, 2009. She has been a fugitive from justice ever since.

She is accused of stealing $11,100 from two prisoner accounts at the Sunnyside Police Department.

Radder said now that Perez is in custody details will be worked out to have her extradited back to Washington state.

Southgate is a suburb of Los Angeles.
