KENNEWICK - Ya Ya Gonzalez got a rare start for the Sunnyside varsity, and it paid dividends for the Lady Grizzly bowling team yesterday.
Gonzalez turned in the top two-game effort on the day at Kennewick's Go Bowl Lanes, leading the Lady Grizzlies to a win over the Chiawana Rivercats.
The two teams actually split the match, 2-2, but the victory went to Sunnyside based on total pinfall. Tuesday's win improved the Lady Grizzlies' overall record on the year to 3-4.
Sunnyside took control of the match in the opening game, coming away with a dominating 684-582 win. Ileana Martinez was the catalyst for the Lady Grizzlies in the first game victory, rolling a 155. Nataly Alvarez, Gonzalez and Marissa Martin added efforts of 140, 136 and 135, respectively, for Sunnyside. Rounding out the first game scoring for the Lady Grizzlies was a 118 tossed by Maleesha Maltos.
Chiawana's bowlers couldn't muster anything better than a 131 in the opener.
The Rivercats, behind a 160 thrown by Carina Garcia and a pair of 153's rolled by Echo Kane and Alex Clifton, rebounded to win game two, 715-680. Gonzalez helped keep the Lady Grizzlies close, however, powering out a team-best 150 in the second contest.
That gave Gonzalez the top two-game series on the day, a 286.
Sunnyside went ahead 2-1 in the match by winning the first Baker game, 159-155. Baker bowling requires each member of the five-girl squads to alternate taking turns throughout the 10 frames.
Chiawana squared the match at 2-all by winning the second Baker game, 138-130.
The team victory was then decided on total pinfall, with Sunnyside coming out on top by a total count of 1,653 pins compared to Chiawana's 1,590 pinfall.
The Lady Grizzly keglers are scheduled to take on West Valley this coming Thursday at Yakima's Nob Hill Lanes. It will be the two teams' third meeting of the year. The Rams have prevailed in the two previous encounters by identical 4-0 scores.
In JV action yesterday in the Tri-Cities, the junior varsity Lady Grizzlies mirrored the performance of their varsity counterparts. The two JV teams split the match 2-2, but Sunnyside got the team victory based on total pinfall, 1,372-1,248.
The Sunnyside JV's top bowler yesterday was Maritsa Rodriguez. She had a two-game series of 274 on efforts of 118-156.
