The Sunnyside girls basketball team picked up its first win of the season this past Friday with a 55-45 decision against the Davis Pirates.
Sunnyside used a huge second half to come back against the Pirates and pull out a win. Down by eight points at halftime, 26-18, the Lady Grizzlies outscored Davis 37-19 in the second half.
"I was impressed with how we put together four quarters," Sunnyside Coach Eric Berg said. "We were down early but kept fighting and stayed with it."
Sunnyside was led by Sam Wright, who had a huge game with 23 points. She also pulled down seven rebounds.
Jessie Robert scored seven points for Sunnyside. Zenaida Perales and Sarasa Partida each added six points for Sunnyside. Hannah Marro had five points and Michelle Galvan finished with four points.
Davis was led by Taryn Cobane with 11 points.
On Saturday Sunnyside traveled to Moses Lake where they ran into the likes of Kayla Bernsen and Jordan Loera, who combined for 46 points in the Chiefs' 74-22 mauling of the Grizzlies.
"We had a big win Friday and we expended a lot of physical and emotional energy," Berg said. "We didn't bring any to Moses Lake."
Sunnyside didn't shoot well at Moses Lake and was out rebounded as well.
Bernsen is a 6'3" junior who dropped 29 points on the Grizzlies. Loera added 17 points.
Berg said Moses Lake would get a rebound and then just throw it up to Bernsen, who was able to go up and get the ball.
Moses Lake led 22-5 after one quarter and 25-11 at halftime.
Destiny Maya led Sunnyside with 10 points. Wright had eight points and Perales finished with four.
Tiffani Morris scored seven points for the Chiefs.
Sunnyside (1-1, 1-4) will host Prosser on Wednesday, Dec. 30, at 5:45 p.m.
