Nellie Harris, 96, beloved mother, grandmother, great- grandmother and great-great-grandmother passed away on Monday, Dec. 21, 2009, in Sunnyside.
Nellie was born Nov. 11, 1913, in Rigby, Idaho, the daughter of Charles and Eleanora (Soderberg) Beckstrand, the youngest of seven children.
She received her education in Utah before moving to Rexburg, Idaho, where she met and later married Glate Harris on May 24, 1932.
In 1947 the Harris family moved to the Valley. Nellie worked as a cook for Sunnyside General Hospital. She also worked as a housekeeper at Sunnyside Memorial Hospital and the LDS Church.
Nellie enjoyed crocheting, traveling and family vacations. In 1999 she took a special trip to Sweden to meet her extended family.
Nellie was always ready to go at the drop of a hat and always looked as she just stepped off the cover of a fashion magazine. She will be remembered as being a sweet lady.
She is survived by her children, Betty Lou Bessey (Gerald) of Spanish Fork, Utah; Dorothy June Higbee (Eugene) of Visalia, Calif.; Barbara Jean Albrecht (Chris) of Sunnyside; and Glate Harris Jr. (Linda) of Spanaway; 17 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and five great- great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; one son, Bobby Harris; three brothers, John Spencer Beckstrand, Charles Wilford Beckstrand and Clifford Lorenzo Beckstrand; and three sisters, Esther Elisabeth Light, Ellen Mathilda Butterfield and Rachel Ceclia Hunter.
Viewing and visitation will be held Monday, Dec. 28, 2009, from 1 to 6 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home in Sunnyside. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2009, at 10 a.m. at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- day Saints in Sunnyside, with burial to follow at Lower Valley Memorial Gardens in Sunnyside.
