'Midnight Live' on tap

The Sunnyside High School leadership class, with assistance from Sunnyside's Promise, is gearing up to present the 2009 Midnight Live party, set to take place at the high school beginning at 8 p.m. this coming Thursday.

The event is open to all Lower Yakima Valley high school students who can present an ASB card, according to Lisa Fairbairn of Sunnyside's Promise, and cost to attend is $5 per student.

SHS leadership class student Hannah Marro is helping to plan the event and said that admission is $3 for students who bring an unused hygiene item, like toothpaste or dental floss.

"We're working with Heritage (University)," explained Marro, adding Heritage students have adopted families and there's a need for such items. Marro said Heritage University, in turn, gave the leadership class money to pay for food and prizes for Midnight Live.

Marro said she's hoping the leadership class will have prizes big and small, as she and her team are still working on procuring items.

The event will feature a movie, dance, games and even group video games. There will also be food.

"It's going to be a big party for New Year's Eve," said Marro.

Fairbairn added, "The idea behind the event when the police department started (Midnight Live) years ago was really to keep kids in a safe place to herald in the New Year in a positive way.

"It's a great opportunity for kids to have fun with their peers and hang out. They don't have to be at a party with alcohol to have fun."

The event is from 8 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.
