RICHLAND - The Mabton High School varsity wrestling team usually goes to Freeman this time of year for an annual tournament. However, due to a housing snafu the Vikings had to cancel and instead ended up competing in yesterday's Hanford Winter Cup for junior varsities.
"I'm really pleased we went," Mabton Coach John Kilian said. "Both of our girls got to wrestle three matches each."
Mabton took 12 wrestlers to the JV tournament and five of them went undefeated on the day. All wrestlers got three matches.
Mary Gutierrez (112 lbs.) got the ball rolling for the Vikings with three straight pins. She recorded a fall against Marsha Enriquez of Sunnyside in 20 seconds. Gutierrez then dispatched Melissa Martinez of Warden in 2:27. Her final pin came against Megan Cole of Riverview. Gutierrez pinned her in 2:10.
Mabton's Vicente Mireles (112 lbs.) started his day with a pin, as well. He stopped Spencer Rojas of Sunnyside in 2:47. Mireles then went on to beat Ryan Leman of West Valley by a score of 9-0 and then scored a win against Aaron Ruiz of Richland, 6-1.
Fabian Ruiz of Mabton (145 lbs.) beat a Hanford wrestler 12-4 to open up his day. Ruiz then pinned Chase Olheiser of Southridge in 1:17. He scored a technical fall against Vaughn Rivard of West Valley via a 20-4 decision.
At 160 lbs., Mabton's Carlos Gastelum pinned Conner Degrosslier of West Valley in his first match in 1:25. He scored his second pin of the day when he got a fall against Bryan Gomez of Sunnyside in 1:28. Gastelum got a third pin as well, but Kilian said no stats were available on that match.
The fifth Mabton wrestler to go undefeated on the day was Eric Huesca (215 lbs.). Again, no stats were kept on this match but Kilian said Huesca pinned his first round opponent in 42 seconds. Huesca then beat a Grandview wrestler 10-2, and then beat Armando Huizar of Pasco by pin in 25 seconds.
Mabton also had three wrestlers pick up one win apiece.
Margie Gutierrez (130 lbs.) lost her first match but rallied to beat Angelita Rodriguez of Sunnyside by a score of 3-1.
Jakob Donner (171 lbs.) won his first match against Chiawana's Jose Valdez, 5-2. Donner then lost his two remaining matches.
Frank Martinez (171 lbs.) won his first match of the day by a pin. He beat Tommy Valdez of Othello in 29 seconds. He lost his last two matches of the day.
"For a young, inexperienced team like we have, this was a good day for us to get some mat time," Kilian said. "There were no byes and everyone knew they were wrestling. It was more predictable, there was no sitting around waiting."
Mabton will get back on the mat on Thursday, Jan. 7, when the Vikings host Highland at 7 p.m.
