MHS girls roll easily over Warriors, 47-18

MATTAWA - Mabton's Lady Vikings claimed victory over a struggling Wahluke team last night, Tuesday, 47-18.

Wahluke lost a star player that moved away. As a result, said Mabton Coach Chris McCallum, "That kind of threw them off a bit."

Despite the win, Mabton continues to struggle with free throw shots, making just 8-of-22 in last night's game against Wahluke.

"It's the only area we needed to improve on last night," McCallum said. "We've lost five games this season, three of the games we lost by a combined total of nine points. We need those free throw points."

McCallum praised the Lady Vikes' defensive effort. "Anytime you hold a team to 18 points, it's a pretty good defensive effort," he said. "We played good defensively with our feet, a lot of man to man."

Of the win, McCallum said, "It was a good way to get out of a long (holiday) break."

Melissa Gutierrez scored a game high 19 points for Mabton, and fellow Lady Viking Crysta Reynolds scored eight points and had 12 rebounds.

"Overall, it was a good game for us," McCallum said.
