Teen shot on Harrison Avenue Monday night

Gun fire broke out just after 9 p.m. last night in Sunnyside in the area of South 10th Street and East Harrison Avenue.

Callers reported hearing between five and seven shots. One caller reported a man had been shot in front of her home, located in the 900 block of East Harrison Avenue.

Upon arrival Sunnyside police officers located the victim, 19-year-old Jose Valencia Jr. He had been shot in his abdomen and told officers he was walking along East Harrison Avenue when the occupants of a passing vehicle opened fire on him.

Valencia is reported to have had a weapon with him and allegedly returned fire before discarding his gun, which is believed to have been picked up before police arrived at the scene.

Valencia was taken to Sunnyside Community Hospital for treatment.

The suspect vehicle is described as a four-door tan or brown sedan and police believe there may be damage to the vehicle as a result of returned shots fired.

The case is still under investigation, suspects are unknown and persons with information regarding the incident are urged to call the Sunnyside Police Department at 836-6200.
