Bette Darlene Smith, 83, loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and friend, went peacefully to be with the Lord in the early morning hours of Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009. She was checked into the ICU at Sunnyside Community Hospital on Valentine's Day. Her family traveled from the west coast to be at her bedside in her last days.
She was born Aug. 30, 1925 in South Dakota to Ralph and Agnes McCulloch. She spent her early youth in the Midwest before moving to Washington state. She met her husband, George Smith, through a mutual friend. They dated until Aug. 20, 1950, when they joined in matrimony. George passed away in 1965 and Bette raised her children on her own.
Kevin Nehls was the first of seven grandchildren and Bette was a favorite grandmother amongst the extended family. Christmas and Thanksgiving were almost always spent at her home.
She is survived by all three of her children, Craig Smith, Cheryl Nehls and Cindy Baker; her sister, Arlene Washenik; seven grandchildren, Kevin and Jamie Nehls, Steven and Sharon Smith, and Bradford, Amanda and Riley George Baker; her son-in-law, Larry Nehls; and her daughter-in-law, Linda Smith.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her son-in-law, Don Baker; her mother and father; and two sisters, Velma Berg and Gladyce Williams.
