Six vie for Sunnyside Council opening

The Sunnyside City Council will have no shortage of candidates to consider for the council seat recently vacated by Bruce Epps.

A total of six candidates signed up by the Feb. 17 deadline, it was announced during the regular council meeting last night, Monday.

The candidates, in the order reported by the city, are Jesse Hernandez Jr., Jose Salas, Kristiann Vlieger, Jason Raines, Craig Hicks and Mike Farmer.

Council will interview each of the candidates during one special study session.

Mayor Paul Garcia originally wanted to have the special session on Monday, March 2. Due to scheduling constraints, though, the meeting to consider the candidates will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, March 9, just prior to the regular city council meeting at 6:30 p.m. that same day.

The special session will be held in the Law and Justice building.

Council may appoint Epps' replacement following the interviews.

If the person appointed to the council seat wishes to retain their position beyond this year, they will need to run in the primary and general elections this fall.
