Kenneth L. Lester, 96, of Yakima died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2009, at Summitview Health Care Center.

He was born Sept. 3, 1912 in Camas to Fred G. and Lydia (Chaney) Lester. He graduated from Wapato High School.

He married Mabel Clapp in Sunnyside on June 16, 1940. He operated a small dairy of Jersey cows and later grew asparagus. They were members of the Sunnyside First Christian Church. He later worked as a custodian, primarily at Outlook School, after selling the dairy herd.

He is survived by four children, Loren Lester of Vancouver, Kathy Gough of Irvine, Calif., Dorothy McGuire of Sacramento, Calif. and David Lester of Yakima; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one great great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife; an infant daughter, Karen; his parents; four brothers and sisters; and great-grandson Nathan McGuire.

Viewing and visitation will be held Tuesday, March 3, 2009, from 1 until 5 p.m. and Wednesday, March 4, 2009, from 8:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home in Sunnyside. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 4, 2009, at 1 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home in Sunnyside. Burial will be at Lower Valley Memorial Gardens.
