Remains of homicide victim identified

The Yakima County Sheriff's Office has identified the remains of a homicide victim whose body had been burned and left in a vineyard on Arrowsmith Road near Sunnyside.

The body of Saul Carvajal Duarte, 39, of Wenatchee was discovered Feb. 12, 2009 and was recently identified through fingerprint examinations performed by the Washington State Patrol crime lab.

Duarte's relatives have been notified and the investigation into the homicide remains open. Detectives with the sheriff's office are focusing on contacting friends, relatives and acquaintances of Duarte. The investigation spans Chelan, Douglas and Grant counties.

The victim's death was earlier this month determined to be a result of a gunshot wound to the torso. His body was burned after he was shot.

In other sheriff's office news, Yakima County deputies have since yesterday (Thursday) been alerted to the theft of livestock in the 1000 block of Midvale Road near Sunnyside. A report of sexual abuse near Mabton has been reported to deputies, and a burglary has been reported in the 1400 block of Ferson Road near Sunnyside.

Deputies have since yesterday also been alerted to a case of fraud in the 100 block of Randal Road near Sunnyside, a graffiti report, a noise complaint, an accident and two suspicious circumstances.
