A man suspected of armed robbery in Sunnyside was able to elude police last night in a car chase and then on foot.
Shortly after 11 p.m. on Monday night Sunnyside police officers were dispatched to a report of an armed robbery at a convenience store in the 400 block of Cemetery Road. The suspect, armed with a handgun, confronted the store clerk and was given an undisclosed sum of money. The suspect then fled in a gray, four-door late 1980s Nissan Maxima.
Police are unsure if there was more than just the armed robbery suspect in the vehicle.
Officers saw the vehicle leaving the area and began a pursuit. The suspect vehicle went westbound on Independence Road, reaching speeds of up to 100 mph. At one point in the chase, police say the driver in the suspect vehicle tried to crash head-on into oncoming patrol cars.
Near the area of Dekker and Independence roads the suspect vehicle sustained two blown tires, forcing the suspect, or suspects, to flee.
The Sunnyside Police Department was assisted by the Washington State Patrol, the Yakima County Sheriff's Department, the Grandview Police Department, the Zillah Police Department and the Yakima Police Department.
But even with this assistance and the help of tracking dogs, the suspect, or suspects could not be located. Police impounded the vehicle and took it to the Sunnyside Law and Justice Center, where it will be processed.
