Ramiro Melendrez, 67, of Sunnyside passed away on July 17, 2009.

He was born Jan. 8, 1942 in Carrizo Springs, Texas to Petra (Reyes) Melendrez and Alfonso Melendrez.

At age 19, Ramiro met his wife Anita (Hernandez) Melendrez of 49 years. Their journey led them to Sunnyside, where they settled and raised their family.

Ramiro was best known for his sarcasm and his loving, caring and giving personality. His main priority was always his family. To him everybody was family. If there was anything he could do to help, he would do it in a heartbeat. To all his children, grandchildren and loving friends, Ramiro was an inspiration or better yet a hero.

We will always remember the man who raised us all, and did it gladly without any complaints. The man who used to sit outside in his yard all day with his cigarette in his left hand, his beer in his right, and always had the biggest smile on his face. When you saw that smile it was enough to warm your heart so much that you couldn't help but smile, and think of what a wonderful man Ramiro was.

Ramiro wasn't just a brother, father, grandfather, or friend. He will continue to be the most important person in our lives. "We just want you to know that we love you so much, and even though it hurts, we know that you are in a better place." Gone from our sights, but never from our hearts. We love you.

Ramiro was preceded in death by his parents, Alfonso and Petra Melendrez and his two brothers, Alberto Melendrez and Vidal Antonio Melendrez.

He is survived by his wife, Anita Melendrez, four children; Tica Montiel, Alfonso Melendrez, Nena Melendrez, Frankie Mendez, and son-in-law, Julio Montiel; 12 grandchildren, Joe Borrego, Jesse Borrego, Sophia Melendrez, Anabelle Melendrez, Buddy Melendrez, Isabelle Maestes, Monica Melendrez, Sarah Melendrez, Anne Marie Melendrez, Nancy Montiel, Julianna Montiel and Miguelito; 11 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews; and 12 siblings, Aurora Escobar, Nick Melendrez, Angela Melendrez, Charra Garza, Avelia Ramirez, Mary Moser, Pee-Wee Cortez, Santa Myers, Cruz Amaro, Richard Melendrez, Julia Melendrez and Carmen Reyes.

Viewing will be held today, July 21, 2009, from noon to 6 p.m. and services will be Wednesday, July 22, 2009, at 10 a.m. at Valley Hills Funeral Home in Sunnyside, followed by a reception at The Forum in Sunnyside.
